My Weekly Musings!

I watch the NFL. Usually tape the games and begin watching after the game has been on for 1 1/2 hours. That way I can fast forward through the obnoxious commercials and game delays. Yesterday I watched the Panther/Eagle game. That game had 24 penalties. An average of 6 per quarter or 1 every 2.5 minutes. Week after week the same penalties get called: offsides, lining up in the neutral zone, pass interference, encroachment, hands to the face, holding, delay of game, late hit, etc. This is not “professional football.” And-the halftime commentators use bad grammar!

A fascinating story! Reflect Orbital, a high-tech company in California will launch its first satellite later this year. Once in orbit, the satellite will deploy mirrored panels used to reflect the sun’s rays back to earth to light up “dark areas.” And-to use the sun’s rays to charge solar panels, giving the panels more power. Can you imagine??

Last week a category 2 hurricane hit parts of Florida, Alabama, and moved northward bringing high winds and rain. Somehow, the hurricane got named “Isaias.” Who names the hurricanes? The World Metrological Organization names these storms, usually names of women. They try to pick names that are common to the areas hit by the storms, and easy to pronounce. I have never heard of anyone named “Isaias.” Nor could the newscasters pronounce the name.

I saw a map of the world showing US troops stationed in various countries. Japan had 55,000 active-duty troops, Germany 37,000, Italy 13,000, South Korea 23,000, UK 10,000 and Spain 4,000. US taxpayers are spending billions to keep the peace. Yet often the US gets criticized by these countries, especially Spain!

Sadly, Jason Arday committed suicide on August 14th. See his picture below. Arday was a professor at Cambridge U. and taught sociology of education. He specialized in racial inequality in education. He was hired in 2023 as part of the university’s diversity efforts. This past July serious allegations started to pour in regarding his academic work and background. Allegedly, he plagiarized large portions of his doctoral thesis, he lied about grant money raised, he lied about being a visiting professor at Glasgow U. and at Ohio State. He once claimed he ran 30 marathons in 35 days, including 9 with a broken leg. He made up data, quotes, and some funding amounts. After the university started to investigate this fraudster, he resigned. A simple background check would have prevented this mess.
